We have decided to resume publishing descriptions of the worlds in our multiverse, picking up where we left off at World 11.
Mirrowmere, also known as “The Shifting Lowlands”
Mirrowmere is a mid-sized world in the eastern part of Dimension, and the only one where the land cannot be trusted to stay put. The ground moves slowly but all the time. A hill can be gone within a week, and a river may change its bed overnight if the soil under it gives way. Maps are of little use here. Local cartographers redraw theirs every month and most of them admit that the work is partly guesswork. The one fixed point is the Anchor Ridge, a long band of grey rock in the north that has not moved in recorded history, which is why every settlement worth the name is built within sight of it.
Most of the population lives in towns on wheels. The houses stand on timber frames and can be hauled by teams of oxen, so a town can follow the good ground when the old ground starts to sink. The Haulers’ Guild decides when a town moves and which route it takes, and its word is rarely questioned. The main export of Mirrowmere is peat-glass, a pale green glass made from marsh sand, which is popular in other worlds for lamps and windows. Travellers are generally welcome, though visitors are advised not to sign long leases. Some regions far from the Ridge have never been properly surveyed, since so far nobody has come back from them with the same map twice.
